Only the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys had a bye in Week 7, but the Bears still managed to move up two spots (from 14th to 12th) after a couple of bad losses by teams ranked ahead of them. The 49ers and Jets both tumbled down the rankings—San Francisco lost both of their starting receivers to injury/illness against the Chiefs, while the Jets allowed Russell Wilson, in his first start of the season, to defeat them by 22 points, spoiling the Rodgers-Adams reunion.
The Chiefs remain in the top spot, primarily due to their defense carrying them to a 6-0 record. This team has not lost since Christmas Day 2023, and despite Patrick Mahomes’ poor play (6 passing touchdowns, 8 interceptions this season), they haven’t given me a legitimate reason to drop them in the rankings. The Lions, with four straight wins, and the Ravens, with five consecutive victories, both have the opportunity to extend their streaks this week against weaker opponents, and continue their push to knock the Chiefs out of the top spot.
The bottom of the power rankings is a mess, with four teams each having just one win. Among the two-win teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars made the biggest jump, moving up four spots after defeating another bottom-feeder team, the New England Patriots. The Miami Dolphins should be getting Tua Tagovailoa back soon, and their one-spot increase, despite losing to Indianapolis, reflects that expectation. I anticipate they will break into the top 20 once he fully returns.
